What made you wanna take care of the gods' shrines here?

It sounds a little naive, I know, but...I thought they looked very sad. I didn't realize at the time that each of these were the shrines of gods until I found the Emperor's. Looking at them, they seemed well-loved once and then abandoned. And I'd heard the stories, that the Gods Wood was terrifying, and those aren't untrue but I thought that someone had cared for them once, loved them, and that person - or people - were long, long gone, maybe scared away.

So I just decided to clean them and give them offerings. What harm could it do? Looking back on it, I realize I looked foolish.

Nah, it makes sense. Did you ever find out who used to look after them, or why they stopped?
