always, #teamdimitri4lyfe

ingrid's relationship with dimitri is the best of both worlds. on the one hand, he is her childhood friend and someone she cares deeply for. on the other, he is the rightful king of fargheus and she sees her place by his side as his knight. that means addressing him with appropriate respect, following his commands, but it also means challenging him and being honest with her feelings. truly she cannot divide this split and so it blends together more than living apart. she calls him "your majesty" and "your highness" because that's who he is -- both friend and king, and she sees no reason to not honor him as such. she was a girl from a relatively poor noble family but he befriended her all the same because of his good heart and kindness. reuniting with him at the academy just makes her cherish their childhood memories even more.

of the three boys she fusses the least about dimitri... but only because she can tell how critical he is of himself. she worries for him honestly, because he's soft and kind and perhaps a little too much for the role he must take in ruling the kingdom. being a king means making hard decisions, sacrifices, and being a knight means serving on behalf of his ideals. sylvain and felix need some healthy doses of shaming to behave, but for dimitri she spends less time chasing him and more time trying to rise up to the level she needs to be as his knight.

and of course she knows how much the tragedy of duscar has weighed on him, even if she doesn't see the full picture until edelgard's betrayal. and when they reunite five years later, ingrid only wonders if there was anything she could have possibly done to help him process what happened. he did as much for her by speaking about the truth of glenn's death, even if it shattered this illusion she had of his noble sacrifice. in her canonpoint he hasn't yet snapped out of that fugue state, so seeing him here completely different and more like how he was years ago -- words can't describe how happy she is! she can actually talk to him and he speaks back without the rage and hatred in his eyes and voice.

end of the day he's her friend, king, and she won't die for him but only because she would rather live to fight for his vision of a peaceful fodlan. she hopes he can be happy when that days comes.
