so a lot of this is tied up in what Edelgard knows about a Mercedes that isn't actually this one and she's doing her best to keep that in mind, but it does inform a lot of how she interacts with this Mercie and it's that Edelgard actually really respects her? Like they were never super-close in Edelgard's world, but when Mercedes put in for a transfer to the Black Eagles after Flayn was rescued, Edelgard knew why but couldn't actually say anything but she understood what Mercedes was looking for and she gets that. It's family, and it's messy and complicated, much like Jeritza himself is, but if Edelgard thought for one second she could get back even one of her siblings...well, even if she never really showed it she empathized quite a bit with what Mercedes was going through.

When Mercedes decided to stick with Adrestia after the war broke out and turned against the Church in a way that was still entirely keeping with her faith, Edelgard was seriously impressed. She still had faith in the Goddess, but she believed that the Church had seriously lost its way and was in need of reform. Edelgard will never be a person of faith, but she's not an enemy of it, so that's a way of thinking she can respect. And Mercedes was willing to put aside everything she had in Faerghus, her life and her friends there because of the strength of her beliefs and for family. Edelgard had always regarded her as a kind person, but she was honestly a little flabbergasted at how similar they turned out to be and this core of steel she never actually realized Mercedes had to be able to make those decisions. So Edelgard made sure the Death Knight stuck around Garreg Mach, even if she never directly talked to Mercie about it to give her the chance she needed.

Edelgard's just now realizing how much of a shame it is that she's never made more of an effort to get to know her Mercedes better, and that's not a mistake she wants to make with this one. Sure she never made the decisions her world's version did, but Edelgard knows what she's capable of, and she's still the same kind person she always was. So as confused and baffled as Mercedes might be about this, Edelgard is gonna make an honest to Goddess attempt to befriend her. Eventually she'd like to tell Mercedes about her other self but at this point it'd probably be really weird to hear that so she's gonna hold off for now.

The fact that she's still from the Academy portion is weird, but not moreso than anything else here, and it honestly does kind of remind Edelgard of happier days (she remembers her school days a lot more fondly than I expect her Azure Moon counterpart does) so that's another bonus Mercedes has going for her.

But yeah, much respect for Miss von Martritz. Edelgard's a fan, so expect tea invites in the near future.
