But no, hilariously, Dante is actually the person (outside of the Blue Lions and even then, she's still reluctant to burden them with her thoughts) that Mercedes is most likely to trust with her more troubled feelings. It's probably outwardly bizarre because Mercedes is calm and composed and Dante is a hooligan twice her age but she's always liked that Dante doesn't seem to expect anything from her. He doesn't expect her to be put-together, he doesn't expect her to be the perfect candidate for a noble wife, and he was just so delighted when she offered to make pizza for him that she couldn't help but be endeared. Him acting like their friendship is more like a business relationship doesn't really faze her, because he's already gone and proven that he cares way more than he pretends to. Whether it's coming to help her in a fight or approaching her to see if she's okay.
Obviously what's really helped her to kind of confirm (with herself, mostly) that she cares a lot about him is when he told her about his brother. What he'd gone through. How it had felt, and how he'd told her they could pretty much share burdens. It's something she didn't expect to hear from him, especially since he's not huge on sharing, but it meant a lot to her, and that's why in the end, she will always choose to stand by Dante's side. Because he understands and because he makes her smile and it's so much easier to be just Mercie with Dante than anything else.
